 A New Life for Adriana

For Adriana Lyons, Euro-Pēds was the place where her new life began. Born 25 weeks prematurely, Adriana has suffered from cerebral palsy since birth. At nearly two and a half years old, she was still completely immobile, unable to roll, crawl, sit, or feed herself. After just 2 weeks of therapy, Adriana is now mobile, crawling with specific intent, responds to yes and no questions and other verbal cues, and knows her right from her left.

Each day children like Adriana learn how to sit up, feed themselves and even take their first steps in the clinic.

Matthew’s Astonishing Show and Tell for Doctors

“…This [Euro-Peds] clinic has been our greatest gift!! My son, Matthew, is now 12. We’ve been coming to Euro-Peds since he was 7. We will be visiting for the 7th time this March…We stay for a 2-week treatment each time. I wish you could understand how valuable this treatment has been for Matthew. There’s no way to put it into words…just how Euro-Peds has changed Matthew’s life…When Matthew was born, his 2-pound, premature body was not supposed to make it another hour. Miraculously, he did live to see the next day, and then another…We were told he’d never walk or talk because of the severe brain damage sustained during a hemorrhage on his second day of life. We’ve since visited those doctors with a show- and- tell session. They were astonished!! And we gave complete credit to the NOMC EuroPeds clinic for Matthew’s ability to transfer, stand and walk!…”

Aroura Gains Independence

For Aroura Bednar of San Clemente, California, Euro-Pēds was the place where her new independence began. Diagnosed at the age of 20 months with a chromosomal disorder called Angelman’s Syndrome, Aroura has struggled to do many things in her seven years that most people take for granted, including standing up and walking on her own.

After attending North Oakland Medical Centers’ Euro-Pēds Clinic, Aroura has made incredible strides in her abilities. “When Aroura arrived at Euro-Pēds, she was only able to take three to five steps from a guided, standing start,” stated Aroura’s mother Latrisha Bednar. “In only two weeks of Euro-Pēds therapy, Aroura was able to stand up from a seated position and walk up to 12 steps without assistance,” she said. “Aroura’s progress has continued even more with her at-home therapy program designed for her by the Euro-Pēds Clinic, and she is now able to go from a sitting position to a standing position on her own and can take over 40 independent steps! Most importantly, her self-confidence has increased beyond measure,” Latrisha says. “We are looking forward to seeing Aroura’s life change even more with continued therapy!”

 Wyatt Takes on New Strength

Wyatt Tollison was born 13 weeks premature weighing only 2 pounds 2 ounces and 15 inches long. While in the Hospital he was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus, which is an abnormal buildup of the brain's normal water-like fluid. Wyatt soon under went a Shunt placement, which is a tube that diverts the excess fluid from the brain to another part of the body. Wyatt, soon after, remained in the NICU for 4 months.

Wyatt was later diagnosed with Cerebal Palsy Homi, and has undergone 3 eye surgeries, 2 Shunt revisions, 2 G-tube placements (permanent feeding tube) and 2 nissen fundaplications. He has endured physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and cranial Sacrium Therapy. He also works with Early Intervention and many physicians and specialists.

In June of 2007, Wyatt was able to experience his first 2 week session at Euro- Pēds. During their first visit Wyatt has gained strength and functional activities that have allowed him a greater independence while at home. The family of Wyatt hopes that he will soon be able to walk gracefully and they feel that Euro- Pēds could help Wyatt's journey to continue.

Taylor Sits Up On Her Own

Taylor was born a happy, healthy baby girl on Christmas Day 2000. Everything was going great developmentally for her until she was around 5 months of age. "I started to notice that Taylor would get startled for no apparent reason, so after observing her behaviors for a few days I called and scheduled an appointment. I had also video taped the episodes."

The doctor had delivered some upsetting news that Taylor had infantile spasms (continuous state of seizures) and that her development and outcome could be bleak. After taking shots and other medications Taylor's spasms stopped, but she was left globally delayed as well as being labeled with various diagnoses such as Cerebal Palsy, etc.

After years of hard work, Taylor has been improving little by little. She went from not being able to hold her head up to being able to sit up on her own. "The greatest improvement that we noticed was after attending our first 2 week session at Euro- Pēds. We couldn't believe how much stronger Taylor was just after the first week. After or two weeks she was taking more weight in her legs and standing with support for various amounts of time, and she was also able to scoot herself around on her behind to where she needed to go. She even started to roll where she wanted to go whereas before she wouldn't."

"The hard work done at Euro- Pēds gave my daughter her first opportunity at mobility and being able to do things on her own. We always look forward to coming back. It is extremely draining on our fiances but when we have gotten results like this then it is worth it."

Hannah Makes Academic Success

Hannah Minks is a 15 year old girl who has been a patient at Euro- Pēds since 2002. She is at Euro- Pēds  6 weeks a year which is 120 hours of therapy each year. For the 2006-2007 school year Hannah was in 8th grade. She received 5 A's Wednesday, January 30, 2008 and 1 B at Southland Christian School in St Cloud FL. Hannah likes writing poetry. She wrote the following poem as an english assignment when she was in 6th grade.

Trusting in the Lord

Trusting in the Lord, what a sweet thing.
Sweeter than all the sounds that the birds will ever sing.
Sweeter than the fragrace of roses in the spring,
Better than any terrstrial thing is trusting in the Lord.

For trusting in the Lord is our shelter in the storm,
Our rest when we are worn, our mending when we're torn.
Trusting in the Lord is like a two-edged sword,
A weapon used against fear and defeat, that makes the heart
with joy to beat.

Trust in the Lord, and He will provide.
He'll be your safety. He'll be your Guide.

Trusting in Him, your purpose you'll find,
And happiness divine.

Our Trust is to be placed in the name of the Lord.
Not in spear, shield, lance, or sword.
Not in our works or our own righteousness, for these two are
Naught when compared to His holiness.
Not in our leaders, not in wicked man, for they are not infallible,
Unlike the Son of Man.
Not in wealth, for it doth waste away.
If we trust in any of thse things, behold, we trust in vain.

But they that trust in the Lord shall see
What a merciful God He has proven Himself to be.
When for pardon to God comes a plea,
As those who trust in Him see,
No sin, no transgression, is beyond His unfailing mercy.

When the woes of life cloud up the skies and the rain begins to pour,
For those who trust in the Lord, deliverance is sure.

And when the last shot of the last battle has fired and the final victory won,
Then the faithful leave this world and ascend to meet the Son.

Standing before Him, clad in snow-white robes
We shall receive our reward,
Those of us who trusted in the Lord.

Taylor Moves More Independently

Taylor Bernard is a bright, engaging and active 5-year old who's looking forward to beginning elementary school in the fall. When she was 15 months old, her parents were told her cerebral palsy would likely keep her from ever sitting or moving independently. Two months later, she participated in intensive suit therapy for the first time, and at the end of the three- week session, she could sit unsupported for several minutes.

Today, thanks to continued intensive therapy at Euro- Pēds, Taylor gets most places she wants to go in her walker and is learning to stand in canes. She can crawl several feet and is working on moving from the floor or chair to her walker and back again. Her goal is to progress from her walker to canes and someday to independent walking!
Every time Taylor goes to Euro- Pēds, she returns home to Virginia stronger and more capable. But she would not be able to continue this highly effective therapy without the gifts of many generous contributors. Taylor and her family are grateful to every donor who is making it possible for her to reach her potential and join her twin sister in leading a successful, independent life.
